Re: crops

funny - I was thinking about that too. Both Terry & I decied that our potatoes were not as productive as last year. My seed pots came fro Dobies in 2008, Kings 2009 - as did Terry. Neither Lady Chrystl or Kestrel were as productive as last year. Nicola - never tried b 4; ok but not heaps. Haven't dig up main crops yet........My sis wondered if last year's poor potato season affected quality of seed pots. Will revert to Dobies to try 2010.My onions were planted last autumn & loved the hot spell in May /June. Decided that if it hadn't been planted by end of June then no-goer - too late/ too wet/not enough sun. Waiting to see if the bottom of my parsnips mirrors the top growth......! Used SEER Rock dust this year - think it made for healthier plants. Have put in some winter salad - land cress, lambs lettuce, rocket, endives and kales n cabbage.

Re: crops

I seem to be doing very well as growing horsetail, nettles and dandelion!

Apart from that I'm very pleased with garlic, raspberries and gooseberry bush - they seem to have settled in quite well.

Re: crops

Lost all 4 of my globe artichokes, presumably to the big freeze; got new ones; no room! Onions, shallots & garlic have been fine for me, even tho I was very late putting them in - they sat in trays for ages. Didn't do autumn sets as wanted to keep to red only. Potatoes great - what varieties did you do? Lady Christl least good.

Re: crops

well horsetail, nettles & dandelions are all high in nutrients, so stew/ compost - don't waste all that goodness. Even weedy compost can be buried in a deep trench cum winter to improve the lower soil & decrease the chances of regrowth. My gooseberry is 3yrs in & cropped v heavily - good value fruit I say - trying to make wine with them.... wish me luck! Stew those garlic leaves & stems to make a fungicide/ insecticide - very smelly though.........but free!
