The regeneration of Mansewood Allotments
Mansewood Allotments were established over 50 years ago with over 140 plots.  Nowadays the site has been reduced to a much smaller size with 22 plots, but we’re much friendlier for it.

The plots had been getting increasingly run down for years and the plot holders unaware of how to get help.  Many other sites had waiting lists of years , whilst we had many empty plots as new people were often put off by simply looking at the fine crops of docks, nettles, brambles and other assorted weeds that were growing.

Over the years people had made an attempt at clearing the mess, the majority failed, but some (this plot holder included!) persevered and reclaimed the land.  It wasn’t until the thought occurred that we’d loose the place to a housing developer that we organized ourselves into a committee and the real work began!

Thanks to the council we had a new security fence, and a safer, more pleasing to the eye, front access area.   This area will already receives eliveries of leaf-mould, compost & wood chips as well as collecting green waste for recycling. It hopefully will soon boast such things as our long awaited compost toilet, new communal hut and roofed patio - for the odd wet day...................
Also, thanks to our benefactors and grant organisations we’ve got money for fireproof sheds, bird boxes and a communal greenhouse.
Finally thank you to all the plot holders who have spared their own time to help with the improvement of the site.

The area next to the main
access path, never a pretty site

Getting prettier, it’s been cleared and levelled.
Up at the gate has an even path of tarmac now.
The next stage awaits

The last of the neglected plots.
